Introducing
‘Bay’ and ‘Maud’

I love working at this size (120cm square) and it has been almost a year since I produced work in this format.

Bay is named after The SS Baychimo. Built in 1914, the Baychimo became a legendary ghost ship after being abandoned in Arctic pack ice near Alaska in 1931. the ship survived for nearly 40 years, frequently sighted drifting alone or frozen in ice. The last known sighting was 1969. She is presumed sunk.

The Maud was a specialised polar vessel, built in 1917 to navigate the Northeast Passage and Arctic Ocean. She became stuck in ice in 1926 and ultimately sunk in 1930. For nearly 80 years her wreckage was visible off the coast of Cambridge Bay in Canada. In 2017 Maud was salvaged and was towed through the Northwest Passage back to Norway where she was built. Her remains now sit awaiting a museum to be built around her.
